Mahatma Gandhi Centenary School

About Us

Welcome to the MGC Bondel

Mahatma Gandhi Centenary School has completed its 50 Golden Years of educating the young boys and girls of Bondel and the surrounding hamlets. Until its inception in the year 1970 the children specially those of the lower middle class families were deprived of high school education as there were no high schools in the vicinity. Late Rev. Fr. Gabriel D’Souza, Parish priest of St. Lawrence Church, Bondel, sensed the dire need of providing education for these children after obtaining the consent of Rt. Rev. Basil D’Souza, the Bishop of Mangalore. Land was allotted to the Ursuline Sisters of Mary Immaculate for the purpose of constructing the school building. Under the able leadership of Rev. Mother Stephania, the then Provincial Superior of the Ursuline congregation, commencing of thehigh school classes took place on May 31st 1970 with the title Mahatma Gandhi Centenary High school, as the year being the very next of the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi. Rev. Sr. Emmanuela Saldana and Rev. Sr. Natalina Kandankulathy were appointed as the correspondent and Headmistress respectively. Rev. Sr. Edward was the Assistant teacher and in charge of the construction work. Sri Shanker Rao was the first graduate assistant. As the new building for the high school was under construction a wing of St.Lawrence Primary school building was used temporarily for high school.

The first batch of S.S.L.C appeared for the examination in 1973 and passed out with very good results. Slowly amenities like computer lab, auditorium, library and science laboratory were extended by the year 1995. The school building was blessed by Rt. Rev. Basil D’souza Bishop of Mangalore on March 30th 1979.

The school progressed in every sphere of activity besides academics. The starting of various associations like the Scouts and Guides, N.C.C. Naval wing, Parent teacher association, etc. are a few of the milestones in the achievements of the school. Students took active part in sports and games events at district, state and national level bringing laurels to the school. Students were also selected to take part in the state level science exhibition.

The long cherished dream of upgrading the school to higher secondary was realized in the year 2002 when permission was obtained from the Higher Secondary department of Education, to start pre-university Education in the school with all three streams of Science, Commerce and Arts.

An English medium primary school as feeder school to the high school was a felt need and the management was in the process of discerning and decision-making. At the opportune time a request was made by the Vivekananda English Primary school management to take over their school. The purchase and changeover of the management was made in the year 2003. It was providential that the M.G.C. High School became a full-fledged school with classes from kindergarten to 12th grade. A new school building for the primary school was constructed and inaugurated in the year 2009.

The School ever remains grateful to the alumni, well-wishers and parents of our students for the financial support extended.

Kindergarten

MGC KINDERGARTEN is run by the Society of the Ursuline Sisters of Mary Immaculate. Our foundress, Mother Brigida Morello was a great educationist who founded the Congregation of the Ursulines of Mary Immaculate in 1649 in Northern Italy. She realized that through the medium of education she could reach the masses and train them to be God-fearing, honest and genuine people. It is from her teachings that we have today our Ursuline Philosophy of education. “Let us contribute to the integrated formation of the young by the type of teaching that tends to bring about a personal synthesis not only between faith and culture but also between faith and life. It is a Christian minority co- educational institution established and administered by the Religious Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of Mary Immaculate. The school is under the religious jurisdiction of the Catholic Bishop of Mangalore Diocese. The course of the studies is planned to lead upto P.U .college, conducted by the Karnataka State Board of Education. The institution also engages itself in various social and charitable activities. The School offers ample opportunities and gives incentive to its students for maximum participation in various contests and events held at district, state and national level. It has provisions for giving special coaching and guidance in the fields of athletics and fine arts. We uphold the noble virtues of justice, truth and dignity of labour. May we be guided and protected by our Foundress Biessed Brigida of Jesus.

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

“ Education is not the learning of facts but the training of minds to think ”.
- Albert Einstein

On behalf of the staff and students, it’s my great pleasure to welcome you for the virtual visit of our school. I hope you will enjoy browsing the website and find it interesting and informative.

The pandemic has forced the teaching and learning process to migrate to the digital mode, but here at MGC we considered this formidable challenge as an opportunity to learn new things. We must remain positive and keep our hopes alive as I believe that “Nothing is predestined. The obstacles of our past can become the gateways that lead to new beginnings."

MGC helps students to become socially responsible members of our community by using strategies such as value orientation, moral and spiritual education and charity services. It is our desire to help students to meet their highest potential in these areas by providing them with an inclusive learning environment. The teaching vision is to motivate the weak, to address the average and challenge the gifted.

Our talented and dedicated staff, both teaching and non teaching, has been showing their care and concern for the students by working from home preparing notes and engaging in online classes. I appreciate their concern in the progress of our students and their sincere commitment towards academics.May the exceedingly great and marvelous God continue to lead us on the right path and bless each one of us.

Thanks for being part of MGC family. May God bless you.
